Twitter locks account of Chinese Embassy in U.S

Similar to the suspension of President Donald Trump’s account over allegations that his tweets incited violence at the Capitol, Twitter has now taken steps against the official account (@ChineseEmbinUS) of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the US.

In response to arguments from critics calling out China over the forced sterilization of Uyghur women, the embassy shot back with a response, saying Uyghur were no longer “baby-making machines" under the PRC.

“We have taken action on this Tweet for violating our policy against dehumanization,” a Twitter spokesman said in a statement. Twitter prohibits the “dehumanization of a group of people based on their religion, caste, age, disability, serious disease, national origin, race, or ethnicity.”

The embassy criticized the move by Twitter. “We noted the restriction Twitter has placed on the account of the Chinese embassy in the US. Its regulatory rules has come under much public attention. We also have concerns over this,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said during a briefing. Twitter remains blocked in China to this day.

This move comes amidst a decision from former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who called China’s actions against the Uyghur people “genocide;” Antony Blinken, Biden's nominee for Secretary of State, has concurred with this statement made by his predecessor.
