Toronto cop killed near City Hall Friday morning

A Toronto police officer was killed this morning in the midst of an incident that occured inside a parking garage on Queen St. West at City Hall.

Toronto Police Chief James Ramer confirmed the death of Constable Jeffrey Northrup at an early morning press conference.

"This event will have a profound impact on our service, on our city and all the members of the policing community," Toronto Police Chief James Ramer told reporters at the scene later Friday morning.

Northrup was described as a "an outstanding police officer," who was very proud of what he did and was "loved by everyone."

Northrup and his partner were responding to "a priority call in the underground parking lot," which was a robbery that was upgraded to a stabbing. Both officers were in plainclothes, but were wearing a chain with identification, said Ramer.

During the incident, Northrup was struck by a vehicle, which Chief Ramer described as a "deliberate and intentional act." After being rushed to the hospital, Northrup was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The second officer has since been treated and released from the hospital.

One person is now in custody, and the investigation is now in the hands of the homicide squad.

Constable Northrup had been on the forces for 31 years. He is survived by his mother, his wife and their three children.

Premier Doug Ford both spoke out to share their condolences with Northrup's loved ones.

"I’m terribly saddened to hear the tragic news of Const. Jeff Northrup who was killed in the line of duty. Jeff served his community for 31 years," the Premier tweeted. "My deepest condolences to his wife, three kids and the entire Toronto Police Service. We are with you mourning this devastating loss."

"On behalf of the three million people who our police officers serve [and] the men and the women of the police service, I begin by extending to the family of officer Northrup our deepest condolences," Mayor Tory stated.
