Single Game Sports betting receives unanimous vote for Regulated Sports Betting Act HOC

The CFL’s desire to achieve single game sports betting is increasingly likely.

Yesterday, the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, through a unanimous vote in favor, approved Bill C-218. Introduced last year by Saskatoon-Grasswood member MP Kevin Waugh, the Safe and Regulated Sports Betting Act will repeals "paragraph 207(4)‍(b) of the Criminal Code to make it lawful for the government of a province, or a person or entity licensed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council of that province, to conduct and manage a lottery scheme in the province that involves betting on a race or fight or on a single sport event or athletic contest."

This bill was previously defeated by the Liberals in its second reading during Trudeau's previous majority government.

3DownNations reports how: "last year the CFL signed a joint statement with the NHL, NBA, MLB and MLS to legalize single-game betting north of the border and commissioner Randy Ambrosie wrote to the Standing Committee prior to Thursday’s vote, calling the legislation ‘a vital economic tool’ for the league.

Some believe the addition of gambling revenue could help solve the CFL’s financial woes and with the tension mounting ahead of an uncertain 2021 season, some good news from the federal government is needed."

Even the Prime Minister supported the motion with a creepy grin back in February.

But not everyone shared the same sentiment of praise, Pat Cummings the Executive Director - Thoroughbred Idea Foundation Tweeted out.
