Singh Goes on Northern Tour, Stops in Nunavut

NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has landed in Iqaluit, Nunavut MP Lori Idlout announced on social media.

Singh is set to meet with representatives of the Nunavut NDP Electoral District Association (the federal riding of Nunavut is presently controlled by the NDP) in their annual general meeting set to take place this evening at the Francophone Centre.

“Our awesome leader will be in Iqaluit Nov. 15 to 17,” wrote Idlout.

Singh and Idlout are set to meet with media representatives today to discuss the ongoing water crisis in Iqaluit,

Singh is also set to meet with the Mayor Kenny Bell and Nunavut Employees Union President Jason Rochon. After this, he will attend a community feast this evening.

Singh said he’s “really looking forward to spending time in Nunavut” alongside Idlout as well as “hearing from people about their concerns.”

Idlout, who succeeded outgoing MP Mumilaaq Qaqqaq in the 2021 Canadian federal election, won the riding handily with 48% of the vote. Traditionally a Liberal riding, Nunavut has increasingly voted with the NDP since 2019. The Conservatives also briefly claimed the riding between 2008-2015, in which MP Leona Aglukkaq served as Harper's Minister of the Environment.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also visited the Nunavut capital on Aug. 30, during this year’s federal election campaign. He made promises on mental health and housing while on site.
