PM Trudeau and Entire Cabinet Abstain on China’s Genocide

Ottawa, ON – Today the House of Commons voted on a Conservative motion to recognize that genocide is currently being carried out by the People’s Republic of China against Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims and to call upon the International Olympic Committee to move the 2022 Olympic Games if the Chinese government continues this genocide.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his entire cabinet abstained from the vote, with only Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau, showing up to indicate “I abstain on behalf of the Government of Canada.”

“Around the world, we have solemnly uttered the phrase ‘never again,’ but it falls flat without action,” says MP Arnold Viersen. “We cannot say never again and turn a blind eye to government coordinated rape, torture, indoctrination, and forced sterilization.”

“Over the past few years, I have risen in the House of Commons dozens of times to raise this issue and present petitions on behalf of constituents and Canadians across the country who want Canada to stand up against human rights abuses and genocide in China.

“Today’s vote was appalling. When in Canadian history has a Prime Minister and his entire cabinet turned a blind eye to genocide?”
