NDP Join Liberals to Defeat Conservative Motion to Bring an End to the Mandates

Ottawa, ON - Today, the House of Commons voted on a Conservative Party motion calling for the Liberal government to table a plan within 14 days for the lifting of Covid-19 mandates. The result of the vote was Yeas: 151 and Nays: 185. The Liberals and the NDP united to vote down the motion with the Conservatives, Bloc Québécois and a single Liberal MP – Joël Lightbound - voting for the motion.

“Today Members of Parliament were given the opportunity to support a Conservative motion calling for a concrete plan that gives Canadians a roadmap out of COVID-19 restrictions,” said Peace River – Westlock MP Arnold Viersen. “I was proud to stand and cast my vote for a plan to return to normal life.”

“The outcome of this vote was disappointing but not surprising. The Liberals and NDP have once again united to uphold government restrictions that divide and separate Canadians. They will need to explain to their constituents why they did so.

“The Liberal government has only doubled down on their efforts to impose further restrictions and refuses to provide any scientific evidence that these mandates will accomplish what they claim they will. In fact, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, Doctor Theresa Tam, said that all existing public health measures needed to be ‘re-evaluated’ so that we can ‘get back to some normalcy’.

“I will continue to stand up for the rights and freedoms of my constituents.”
