MP Viersen Condemns $48 Million Bonuses for CMHC Bureaucrats

Barrhead, AB – This past week, it was revealed that the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) handed out over $48 million in bonuses over the last two years to its top staff. Arnold Viersen, MP for Peace River – Westlock issued the following statement:

“At a time when Canadians are struggling to afford a home, facing massive cost of living increases and unchecked inflation, I am furious that a federal agency would be carelessly throwing around massive bonuses.”

“The CMHC exists for a single reason: to make housing affordable for everyone in Canada. With housing prices up 29 per cent in the last year and doubled since the Liberals took office, the CMHC has clearly failed to accomplish its mandate.

“Performance bonuses require successful performance. You don’t get a pat on the back for failing Canadians, much less outrageous bonuses.

“The $48 million in bonuses could have been used by the CMHC to help 140 families in Alberta to buy their first home.

“The CMHC owes Canadian taxpayers an apology – and their money back.

“The only way to prevent blundering bureaucrats from having their pockets filled with taxpayer funds, is to get rid of the Liberal government. Conservatives believe in fiscal responsibility and that the best way to help Canadians realize the dream of homeownership is to help build more homes from coast-to-coast-to-coast.
