Infrastructure minister Catherine McKenna sets to retire from politics and fight for Climate Change

Infrastructure Minister Catherine McKenna will not be running for re-election.

Many predict her strongly Liberal riding — Ottawa Centre — may serve as the launching pad for former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney, if he should run in the next election.

McKenna held the riding since 2015. Prior to this, it was held by the NDP. Although McKenna held a news conference Monday to announce her decision, the Canadian Press announced her decision earlier in an advance copy of her remarks.

McKenna says she wants to spend more time with her three children and devote her professional energies to the fight against climate change. McKenna achieved fame for overseeing the introduction of the federal government’s carbon pricing plan as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s first environment minister.
