BREAKING: Governor General Payette to resign

The Buffalo Tribune reports that Governor General Julie Payette is set to resign after a workplace report showed that she oversaw a "a toxic work environment at Rideau Hall."

An independent firm was contracted to head the report. The head of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Dominic LeBlanc, is overseeing the review. After negative findings were made public, Payette tweeted that she was "deeply concerned about the media reports" and she "takes harassment and workplace issues very seriously ... I am in full agreement and welcome the independent review."

It should be noted that the Trudeau government dismissed the committee set up by former Prime Minister Stephen Harper to advise and select prospective candidates to serve as either governor general or as the lieutenant governor of the provinces. Rather, the Trudeau government selected Payette directly back in 2017.

CBC claims that staffers reported the governor-general throwing "tantrums" in both the office and on trips, denigrating both her staff and their work to the point that "employees have been seen leaving her office with tears in their eyes or crying in their vehicles." 20 public servants spoke confidentially with CBC to confirm these allegations. One called Rideau Hall a "house of horrors."

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Richard Wagner, as Deputy Governor General, will exercise the functions of the Governor General until the office is filled.
