Amarjeet Sohi expected to throw his hat into the race for Edmonton mayor

Former Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, MP for Edmonton-Mill Woods and city councillor Amarjeet Sohi is expected to join the crowded mayoral race for Edmonton today at 10 AM over Facebook.

The announcement, if it is what we expect, will end speculation and confirm he's running in the mayoral election set to occur in October.

Presently, nine candidates are set to succeed two-term mayor Don Iveson, who has announced he is not seeking re-election.

Last Wednesday, Sohi said he was "really seriously considering to put my name forward." “Edmonton is such a phenomenal, diverse, big city. Being at the helm of responsibility leading it is not something I take lightly.

“So I need to continue to have conversations that I had in the past number of months to understand peoples’ aspirations, dreams, and anxieties that they’re feeling.”

Sohi noted that he has had discussions with more than 200 people. If he is to run, he noted that his campaign platform would focus on a COVID-19 recovery strategy, improving Edmonton’s economy, supporting local businesses, mental health, lack of affordable housing available, in addition to racial equity and justice.

He described the decision to run as a “family decision."
