Alberta Indigenous Games set to begin in Edmonton

Canada’s largest indigenous multi-sport summer games is set to begin this week in Edmonton. The 2021 Alberta Indigenous Games will launch this Thursday.

What's taking place? Over 2,000 indigenous youth from Alberta are invited to engage in a week of competitive sports, traditional games, special events, education, and cultural connection.

The event is set to be held at Rundle Park from August 12 to 19. There is no requirement for athletes, coaches, or anyone else to be vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine to participate in the games.

Athletes will participate in 12 different sports, from lacrosse, basketball, baseball and golf.

In addition to the sporting events, an entertainment stage, BBQ & round dance and a talent show will be on the grounds.

Athletes are allowed to compete in multiple sports. "Monday. August 16th is a break day from all of the major team sports (Fastpitch Softball, Basketball, Volleyball, Lacrosse, Ball Hockey) for one-day sports as we encourage all athletes to try out the sports of Rugby 7’s, Beach Volleyball, Cross Country and Handgames, which are all free to register and participate in," a memorandum reads.

"If there are not enough registrations for any one division then that specific sport maybe subject to cancellation or modified to play up in a higher division."

All participants are welcome, but youth under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.
